The Great Lakes have produced an immense amount of lake effect snowfall this week, which is fairly common in November and December.
In 1913, however, two strong storms converged near the Great Lakes in what's sometimes referred to as the "Great White Hurricane."

This storm not only dropped huge amounts of snow, but severe winds and monstrous waves also sunk a dozen ships and destroyed many more on the lakes.
The disaster resulted in more than 250 deaths and more than 100 years later, it still remains the worst natural disaster ever recorded on the Great Lakes.
