Thousands of red crabs have been discovered by scientists swarming in low-oxygen waters just off the coast of Panama.

A research team was studying bio-diversity at the Hannibal Bank Seamount when they discovered the crabs swarming in waters just above the sea floor.

The crabs were found more than 1,100 feet underwater.

Experts have identified them as pleuroncodes planipes, a species abundant off the west coast of Baja, Calif.

Scientists say red crabs have never been found this far south.  They believe the low oxygen could protect them from predators.
