(CNN NEWSOURCE) NASA has released stunning footage of the aurora borealis and aurora australis shot from the International Space Station.

The five-minute clip features time-lapse shots in ultra-high definition.

The aurora borealis can be seen in at high northern latitudes, hence the nickname "northern lights."

The aurora australis is visible in extreme southern latitude areas like Antarctica, Chile, and Australia.

Both occur when electrically charged sub-atomic particles in earth's magnetic field collide with neutral atoms in the upper atmosphere.
