The coldest air of the season hit the Treasure Coast Thursday morning and many jumped into action to make sure that everyone was warm.
At the St. Lucie County Humane Society, they took precautions to keep their animals safe.
Since some of the kennels at the Fort Pierce location have portions that are outside, heaters and blankets were used to keep animals warm.
Shelter officials said the heaters switch on when temperatures dip below 65 degrees. Smaller animals were fitted with sweaters too.
Pet owners are urged to bring their pets in. It is suggested you provide them with a blanket to sleep on.
The ASPCA also recommends extra kibble in their bowls since pets burn extra energy by trying to stay warm in the wintertime. So, feel free to add a little bit more food to provide the much needed calories to stay warm.
