PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Port St. Lucie police have arrested a serial smash and grab car burglary suspect.

29-year-old William Edward Harmon Jr. of 942 SW Haleyberry Avenue in Port St. Lucie was arrested at 11:30 a.m. Friday by Port St. Lucie police.

St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken J. Mascara says Port St. Lucie police worked in cooperation with St. Lucie County Sheriff's Detectives, who confirmed Harmon to be the suspect wanted in five other recent burglaries.

According to SLCSO, 13 parking lot car burglaries were reported where car's windows were smashed and the suspect took items such as purses, backpacks, identifications, wallets, jewelry and more.

On Thursday, Port St. Lucie police were called to the Fortis School for another smash and grab car burglary.

Port St. Lucie Police Detectives conducted a follow-up investigation of that crime and found that the victim's credit card was fraudulently used at a 7-Eleven gas station in Fort Pierce on Friday.

Police say at the same time this was happening they heard on the police radio that another smash and grab car burglary had been reported at Planet Fitness in the Darwin Square shopping plaza of Port St. Lucie.

According to police, Detectives observed the suspect's car, a black and grey Lexus with a California license plate, driving north on NW Peacock Boulevard. Detectives followed the suspect's car into the Five Guys parking lot on NW St. Lucie West Boulevard and made contact with the driver, William Edward Harmon Jr.

According to Port St. Lucie Police Chief John Buldoc, Detectives located the driver's license and purse of the victim of the Darwin Square car burglary in Harmon's possession. He was arrested, questioned, and charged with two car burglaries.

Detectives are continuing their investigation into the additional 8 car burglaries possibly connected to Harmon, Buldoc said.

Sheriff Mascara said charges from the five cases investigated by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office are forthcoming.
