The Boca Raton Police Department says there have been a series of purse snatchings and carjackings recently. Three people are under arrest but police are looking for more possible suspects.

The crimes have happened during the day and night.

"We want to get the word out to residents that we have had a number of incidents over the last month or so and just keep alert," said Boca Raton police spokesman Mark Economou.

Rico, who did not want his last name used, said an armed person followed him. Luckily, he was not hurt.

Former police officer John Riddle teaches people how to protect themselves. He's the owner of Progressive Self Defense Systems in Boca Raton.

"When we pull into that parking space we need to take a few minutes and look around," Riddle said.

He suggests that when you get out of your car, continue to look around. For women, be careful how you carry your purse.

"They have a large purse they carry it over their shoulder. If they are walking and the traffic is on their left side, take the purse and put on your right side. That way if someone leans out and tries to grab the purse, it's not there," Riddle said.

"If they come up to you and say give me the car, give them the car, it's property, it can be replaced," Riddle said.

Economou says these types of crimes are happening in other areas. He wants people to be cautious and aware of their surroundings.
