PALM CITY, Fla-- While many of us enjoy a day off on Christmas Day, others are hard at work to make sure we stay safe while celebrating.

The firefighters at Station 21 in Palm City have been working since 8:00am Christmas morning, and they won’t get off until 8:00am the next morning.

While they’ve had a steady flow of calls Friday, these brave men and women are still managing to enjoy the holiday. “We went and got some nice steaks, and we’re doing shrimp, some asparagus, “ said Lt. Jim Diapoules.

In between the calls for service, the crew is cooking up a feast.

“Although we miss our family, it is nice to spend it with the guys and gals that work in this department,” said Diapoules. “

We’re all family together. Everyone’s family is our family,” said firefighter Derek Hartman.

Most of them still figure a way to have Christmas with their families, too.“With having the little ones, they still believe and they’ve got the spirit,” said Hartman. “You find ways to make it work.”

“Like Christmas morning for me started at 5:30am at my house,” said Diapoules.

And knowing they are helping keep their community safe on Christmas makes it all worth while. Most of us, we live here, we grew up here. We went to the high school here. We want to take care of everyone who lives here,” said Diapoules.
