GIFFORD, Fla. -- The Indian River County Commission voted unanimously to rename 28th Avenue in Gifford to Deputy Garry Chambliss Memorial Avenue, to honor the deputy shot and killed while standing outside a friend's home on February 17, 2017.

Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar stated, "The Indian River County Sheriff's Office will forever remain mindful of the tragic loss of one of our own. This befitting tribute to Garry will serve as a reminder of his honorable dedication to his family, the community, and our agency. Our detectives continue to work diligently to bring his killer to justice."

In the coming weeks, new signs will be placed along 28th Avenue between 41st Street and 45th Street.

Chambliss was shot in the chest by a gunman approximately 160 yards away. Investigators do not believe Chambliss was the intended target of the deadly shot. The Sheriff's Office is still looking to locate the gunman. If you have information helpful to their investigation, contact Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273-TIPS or www.tcwatch.org.  Tipsters can remain anonymous and be eligible for up to $5,000 for tips leading to an arrest in this case.
