WEST PALM BEACH, Fla-- Some intersections in Palm Beach County prove to be more dangerous than others for pedestrians.
A man is fighting for his life after being hit by a car Monday night in Boynton Beach. Up in West Palm Beach, police are still searching for the driver of an SUV that hit a man crossing the street.
There were 877 accidents involving pedestrians, which includes bicyclists, in Palm Beach County last year, according to the county's Traffic Accidents Records Coordinator.
"They missed me by that much." That comes as no surprise to Thomas Maxwell, who walks and takes the bus everywhere. He had a close call just the other day.
"I was just passing the front of a car, and they didn't see me. They almost hit me," said Maxwell.
Topping the list as possibly the most dangerous intersection for pedestrians, Okeechobee Blvd. and North Military Trail. It had 8 pedestrian-involved crashes last year.
"You've got to watch out for them." That news is also no surprise for Dorena Brooks. She doesn't have a car and walks across that bustling intersection regularly.
"I wait, try to wait, until the very last car passed. Then I cross the street," said Brooks.
Coming in at a close second, with 5 crashes each, Forest Hill Blvd. and 16th Place South and Summit Blvd. and S. Military Trail.
Moving down the list, and farther south, N. Federal Hwy. and NE 5th Avenue tied with West Atlantic and North Congress. Those are also tied with S. Military Trail and Forest Hill Blvd and S. State Road 7 and Sandalfoot Blvd.
"I am always careful," said Maxwell. "I am ultra careful about everywhere I cross."
Some of these intersections are also some of the most dangerous for car crashes in general because a pedestrian may be injured by a car as the result of a car crash.
