President Donald Trump will be back in Palm Beach County this weekend, which means traffic headaches and a lot of extra security.

A one local commissioner says taxpayers should not be the only ones responsible for covering the costs of Trump's visits to our area.

Palm Beach County Commissioner Dave Kerner says he is looking for a way to ease the burden of the president's trips.

He says it's an additional cost for the sheriff's office of $60,000 a day when trump in town.

Kerner said he wants to look at how much these visits to Mar-a-Lago cost taxpayers every year.

Then he wants to essentially create a rule where the property owners pay back that amount.
He says since the property is receiving the benefit, they should be able to recoup the costs.

Kerner doesn't think that palm beach county should bear the burden alone.

“There is difference between visiting Palm Beach County and governing from Palm Beach County and then governing from Palm Beach County. So, we are getting to the point in the frequency of travel that he is beginning to govern from Palm Beach County.  With that becomes increased capital cost to pay for the protection,” said Kerner.

The commissioner says this idea is still just a concept.

He wants to hear feedback but he also thinks finding a solution for Palm Beach County taxpayers is the right thing to do.

If this idea does move forward, the county commission would vote on it.
