Here's a checklist to help get you and the kids ready for the school year

As summer break comes to an end, it's important to get your children back to routines that will help them succeed this school year. Here is a daily guide counting down to the first day of school to help get yourself and the kids rested and ready for learning.

The first day of school in Okeechobee County is Thursday, Aug. 10. Palm Beach, Indian River and St. Lucie county students return on Monday Aug. 14. Martin County schools open on Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Checklist:

7 days before school starts
ADJUST THE SLEEP SCHEDULE: Go to sleep and get up a little bit earlier each day this week. Start with half-hour increments.

6 days before school starts
GET ORGANIZED: Clean out the closet to make room for the new school clothes you just brought home. Get the school supplies and study area in order.

5 days before school starts
SHIFT THEIR BRAINS INTO "SCHOLAR" MODE: Finish assigned summer reading or visit cultural attractions like museums.

4 days before school starts
GET READY FOR LUNCH PACKING AGAIN: Dust off the lunch boxes and make sure you’re stocked up for the week.

3 days before school starts
GET REACQUAINTED: Reacquaint your kids with the calendar schedule they'll use to manage their activities.

2 days before school starts
TALK ABOUT IT: Discuss what your kids can expect on the first day so they feel more prepared.

1 day before school starts
REVISIT CHECKLIST (THEN RELAX): Give the ‘to-do list’ one last glance, then enjoy a nice relaxing evening with the family.
