PARIS (AP) -- Iceland pulled off one the biggest shocks in European Championship history, beating England 2-1 and advancing to the quarterfinals at Euro 2016.

England slumped to its most embarrassing loss in a generation after taking the lead in the fourth minute when Wayne Rooney scored from the penalty spot.

Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson took advantage of defensive shortcomings to give Iceland the lead by the 18th minute, and their teammates defended superbly to earn the biggest win their history.

The country of 330,000 people next will play host nation France in Saint-Denis on Sunday, while England heads home early again for another post-tournament inquest.

The English haven't won a match in the knockout stage of a major tournament since 2006.
