The Miami-Dade Police Department said a man killed his wife and then took his own life at a KFC, Taco Bell restaurant location in Doral on Sunday.
The incident occurred shortly after the restaurant opened at 11 a.m. The woman worked at the restaurant located at NW 41st Street and 107th Avenue.
Police said the husband, described as a 53-year-old white Hispanic, asked for his wife in the lobby of the restaurant, got into an argument with the 51-year-old woman and proceeded to fatally shoot her.
The couple may have been going through a divorce, police said.
The subject pulled out a firearm and began shooting at his wife. She was attempting to get away and she ran toward the back. He continued shooting her, striking her several times," Miami-Dade Police Department spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta said.
At that point, he returned to the lobby and shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man and woman had a child. The woman also had another child from a previous relationship.
Zabaleta urges anyone who is a victim of domestic violence to speak up.
"We see that there’s a lot of victims out there that are victims of domestic violence – that’s why they call it the silent crime," Zabaleta said. "They are afraid to come forward and speak and, unfortunately, if you don’t take care of these domestic issues they do escalate and it ends up in a tragedy like the one that we have today.”
