MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. -- Two teens are under arrest after a chase led deputies from Lauderhill to Palm City.
Deputies say the two Broward County teenagers, ages 15 and 16, went on a crime spree, stole a vehicle with a gun inside, then led authorities through three counties Saturday at 1:50 a.m.
A pursuit by law enforcement officers began in Lauderhill. With assistance from The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Air Unit, Martin County Sheriff's Deputies were able to deploy stingers and disable the fleeing stolen vehicle on Interstate 95 near mile marker 106 in Palm City.
The suspects bailed out of the vehicle and ran on foot, but were soon captured by Martin County Sheriff's Office deputies with the assistance of a Stuart Police K-9 unit.
The stolen gun was recovered at the scene.
During the chain of events, a 23-year-old Lauderhill police officer, who was part of the initial incident, attempted to pull to the side of I-95 to assist officers at an unrelated crash. While doing so, his patrol car collided with a motorcyclist, who was identified as Robert Alfred Perone, 47, of Port St. Lucie.
Perone was transported to Martin Memorial South where he was pronounced dead.
The Lauderhill officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at Jupiter Medical Center. His name has not been released.
The two teens have been charged in Martin County and are being held at the Martin County Jail.
The story was updated to reflect Perone's age.
