A FIU football star, who many thought would have a future in the NFL, will not play again in college after his pregnant girlfriend allegedly threw boiling water on him after an argument.

According to a police report from Halloween night, Jonnu Smith – a tight end for the Panthers – was arguing with Mary Gaspar, who is five months pregnant, for much of the day about how much attention she was getting in their relationship.

After returning to his dorm room on campus, Gaspar boiled a pot of water and threw it on Smith.

Telling police she was feeling “emotional and stressed”, Gaspar then told police she hit him when Smith didn’t react strongly enough for her. She was charged with aggravated battery and released on a pre-trial release order.

Smith sustained severe burns to various parts of his body – including his head, neck, back and arm. He did not play in last week’s loss to Western Kentucky and has officially been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Considered one of the top tight ends in college football this season, Smith was projected to be selected in the late rounds of next April’s NFL Draft. He caught 39 passes this season for 441 yards and three touchdowns – catching one each in the team’s last three games.

For his career, the Ocala native caught 175 passes for 1936 yards and 17 touchdowns.
