The Florida Department of Transportation will not recommend a traffic light for a Delray Beach intersection where a Lamborghini crashed into and killed an Uber driver in a Buick Enclave.

The collision took place in September at Federal Highway and NE 1st Street.

J. Gerald Smith, 82, died in the crash.

Among the FDOT’s conclusions:

  • Replace the existing stop signs on NE 1st Street with oversized signs.
  • Supplement the proposed stop signs with “traffic from left (right) does not stop” plaques.
  • Install a ‘cross road’ sign on the east and west sides of State Road 5/US-1/NE 6th Avenue, approximately 120 feet south of NE 1st Street.
  • Periodically review the safety and operation of the intersection with the city.

The police investigation into the crash is ongoing.
