A Martin County battalion chief is recovering Wednesday after he was involved in a crash with a semi while responding to a call on Tuesday.

Investigators said the driver of the semi failed to yield. Sheriff deputies say drivers failing to yield or move over for emergency vehicles is a problem they face daily.

Out on Martin County's roads every Wednesday, Lt. Stephen Mochen is on traffic enforcement.

Mochen said it's all too common. WPTV watched him pull over four people in just a matter of minutes for not yielding to law enforcement or not moving over for pulled over cars.

He says most of the time, there's a reason.

"Texting, doing something else to distract him," said Mochen.

Mochen has advice for drivers.

"Obey the stop signs, the traffic signs, the yield signs and the move over law, because it could end very badly for someone very quickly," said Mochen.
