A precautionary boil water notice is in effect for all residents and businesses served by the Vero Beach water system after a power outage Sunday night.
About half of the city of Vero Beach was without power Sunday night after a transformer blew around 6:25 p.m., according to City Manager Jim O'Connor.
This caused water pressure to drop to 20 pounds per square inch in the system. All water used for drinking or cooking should be boiled.
The city said the boil water notice will remain in effect until testing shows that the water is safe to drink, which could be until Tuesday or Wednesday.
O'Connor said power was out for about 45 minutes and restored between 8:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Half of the city was affected by the power outage.
Law enforcement also worked to direct traffic in the intersections without traffic signals.
Areas affected by the power outage included the Indian River County Jail, Indian River Medical Center and the airport, which all ran on generator power.
