WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Staff with the American Red Cross say the agency is closely monitoring what's happening in the tropics right now.

"We've been watching the tropics very closely over the last 48 hours," said spokesman Steve Bayer.

"We've ramped up with our people. We have shelter managers and assistants that are on-call. We've spoken to our feeding vendors. They're going to be ready to help us out," he added.

The Red Cross will open up its shelters once it gets approval from the county's emergency operations center.

Bayer said it's really uncertain right now what will happen since this storm has been very unpredictable.

Bayer continued, "If it's just a flooding event, that may affect us also. So we really don't know what it is."

The Red Cross is always in need of volunteers. If you'd like to help, call (561)833-7711.
