Flares are for emergencies only

The Coast Guard is reminding you that flares are to be used for emergencies only.
In recent days the Coast Guard has responded to a series of costly false alarms. In one case, a boater who set off a flare prompted an air and sea search that cost the agency more than 43-thousand dollars.

Not only are they costly, searches also tie up valuable resources, and could put responders in harm's way.
Boaters who wish to train with flares should contact the U.S. Coast Guard in advance, and advise them of their intent. This is a timely reminder as we enter spiny lobster season.
