Train derailment Port of Tampa: 15 train cars derail, 3 cars leaking ethanol

TAMPA - Early Thursday morning a cargo train derailed at the Port of Tampa causing an ethanol spill.

Tampa Fire Rescue reports 15 of the 88 train cars are on their side. Three of the cars are actively leaking ethanol, a highly flammable liquid.

Firefighters are coating the spill in foam to keep the fire hazard to a minimum. They are monitoring wind conditions to make sure any potential fumes do not spread from the spill site.

Authorities have not ordered any homes to be evacuated but all streets into the port are closed.

CSX officials are working on getting the proper equipment on scene to upright the 15 rail cars involved in the derailment.

Officials say it could take much of the day to clean up the area. The access roads to the port are closed, though officials say some nearby roads remained open.
