Sanford International Airport proposes using artificial grass to deter birds

SANFORD, Fla. - Sanford International Airport officials want to install artificial turf to discourage birds from hanging around the airplanes.

Officials say birds cause problems for dozens of planes every year.  One jet was forced to make an emergency landing after a bird flew into one of its engines.

Since artificial turn won't retain food or water, birds are not as interested to hang around the airport.

Officials have proposed that three acres of fake grass be proposed for the north side of the airport.  It is expected to cost about a half million dollars.  The project will be finalized in February.
