TAMPA, Fla. - Southbound I-75 is closed between Exit 279/SR-54 and Exit 275/SR-56 in Wesley Chapel, and is expected to remain closed until approximately 6 P.M. Thursday.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a tractor-trailer transporting mail hit a guardrail structure in a construction zone around 6:30 A.M. Thursday, causing the truck to jackknife.
A dump truck behind the trailer was unable to stop, and crashed into the back of the semi. Both vehicles caught fire. The drivers of both of the trucks received minor injuries.
The US Postal Service was called to the scene to recover mail carried by the tractor-trailer, much of which was damaged or destroyed.
The crash occurred in the construction zone between CR-54/SR-56 and SR-56. The Florida Department of Transportation says the southbound lanes of the interstate received significant asphalt damage that must be repaired before opening the roadway to traffic.
