Giant purple chicken stolen in Putnam County, three men charged with grand theft

Witnesses say chicken tied to truck, ridden

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. - Putnam County investigators say it was "fowl" play when three young men stole a giant aluminum chicken.

According to the Florida Times-Union, a resident heard a commotion at 6 a.m. Tuesday, and saw three young men stealing a 9-foot, 600-pound chicken statue.

The chicken was hooked to a Chevrolet truck and dragged for a mile.

At one point, one of the thieves mounted and rode the purple poultry.

Sheriff's deputies told the paper that the chicken was soon unhooked from the truck before the men ran, but detectives caught up with three suspects the next day.

The men, aged 18, 19 and 21, were charged with grand theft.

The chicken is worth $2,300 and it was returned to its owner, though the bird was banged up in the ordeal.
