No charges against Florida veteran who blocked Turnpike, threatend suicide

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- No charges have been filed against an armed Vietnam veteran whose hours-long negotiations with police clogged South Florida traffic.

The man parked his van Monday on Florida's Turnpike and threatened to kill himself. Authorities closed the turnpike and portions of two other expressways while they tried to stop him.

The man surrendered three hours later with no shots fired. Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle tells The Miami Herald that the man was not charged with a crime. Engle says the man was taken for a psychological evaluation.

Engle says the man told police that he faced deportation and "was having issues getting benefits from the Veteran's Administration."

The man's attorney says the veteran is a Colombian national honorably discharged from the Army. He has sought U.S. citizenship for years.
