ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - A dolphin that beached itself in Volusia County Thursday night had to be euthanized.
The 8-foot bottlenose dolphin washed up in Ormond Beach emaciated and obviously sick.
Beachgoers noticed the dolphin Thursday afternoon and members of the Volusia County Marine Mammal Stranding Team were working late into the evening to save the animal.
Ormond Beach resident John Meade says he spotted the dolphin "tumbling and tossing with the surf." He and other beachgoers worked to stabilize it until help arrived.
Biologists from Hubbs-Seaworld say the animal may have had a virus that has killed hundreds of dolphins along the eastern seaboard this year. It's called the Morbillivirus and it's highly contagious to other dolphins.
The dolphin was placed on wet towels to keep it wet moist, but the animal could not be saved.
