PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A Port St. Lucie police officer is recovering, after an "electrifying" experience on the job.
Officer Robert Penney was one of two officers who were near the Saints Golf Course in Port St. Lucie on a call, about four o'clock Thursday afternoon.
A lightning bolt struck the ground just feet away from the officers, and Officer Penney felt the shock.
"Lightning bolt came down," recalled Penney. "All I heard was a loud crash, bright light came near. You could almost feel the energy coming out of your fingertips. The only way I can describe it, is like the worst tazing I ever had."
Officer Penney's sock shows where his boots melted into the fabric, from the intensity of the lightning strike. He suffered a hearing loss for 45 minutes afterwards.
