Fort Pierce man shot, killed after confrontation Thursday night

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A 24-year-old Fort Pierce man was fatally shot near Fort Pierce after a brief confrontation around midnight and sheriff's investigators are asking for help in finding who did it.

Thomas James Alexander was found shot several times at Glenview Avenue and South Seventh Street south of Fort Pierce — a few blocks from where St. Lucie County Sgt. Gary Morales was fatally shot during a morning traffic stop on Feb. 28. His accused assailant, Eriese Tisdale, is in jail on a first-degree murder charge.

In the latest incident, deputies got a call about a shooting at 12:30 a.m. They reported finding Alexander had been shot after what they said was a brief confrontation with an unknown person or persons, according to a sheriff's report.

A Fort Pierce Police Department K-9 team was brought in but no suspects were found.

John Widdowson, 57, said he lives at the nearby Windsong mobile home community.

Widdowson said he was on his couch in his living room and described a series of shots.

"I heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, and I said, 'Oh that's a gun,' and then about 10, 20 seconds later I heard another two shots, and then three right behind that," Widdowson said. "So I figured it was, you know, a gun battle or something."

Widdowson said he thought the incident happened nearby at Edwards Road and Oleander Avenue

"I moved up from Fort Lauderdale, which is a little rough, and I thought it'd be a little safer here," Widdowson said.
