Brian Hart is charged with pointing a laser light at a St Lucie County Sheriff's helicopter

FORT PIERCE, Fla - A 20-year-old Plant City man has been arrested by St Lucie County Sheriff's deputies on charges that he pointed a laser device at the sheriff's helicopter.

Deputies say that the helicopter was on routine patrol and training Thursday night near I-95 and Okeechobee Road, in Fort Pierce.

The sheriff's pilot said that the aircraft was being illuminated by a green laser beam coming from a device in a pickup truck.

The chopper, according to deputies, followed the truck until officers on the ground were able to stop it.

Deputies said that Brian Hart, a passenger in the vehicle, admitted that he shined the beam at the sheriff's helicopter.

He was charged with pointing a laser device at a pilot. The offense is a third degree felony and Hart could face up to five years in jail and a $200,000 fine.

The St Lucie County Sheriff's Office says that laser devices are a threat to their pilots safety when they are in the air.
