GULFSTREAM, Fla. - The search for a missing 17-year-old male swimmer will resume early Saturday morning, according to authorities. The search for the swimmer shifted on Friday to a recovery mission hours after his friends said he went missing 250 feet off of an unguarded portion of Gulfstream Park.
Investigators said Rodelson Normil, a Boynton Beach High School junior, was at the beach with a group of friends when he vanished in the rough waves.
The father of the missing swimmer, Roger Normil, said the last thing he told his son was to stay out of the water on Friday. Roger Normil said his son was not a very good swimmer.
A rip current was issued on Friday at Gulfstream Park.
Red flags flapped in the wind as a U.S. Coast Guard chopper flew overhead searching for the teen.
Boynton Beach Fire Rescue's Marine Patrol combed the rough seas as boats from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office closely followed behind.
Investigators said the first 60 minutes of the search were critical in finding the missing swimmer.
