Indian River firefighters quickly contain brush fire south of Vero Beach

— Strong gusts caused a 2-acre brush fire to flare up Saturday afternoon south of Vero Beach, and fire crews quickly contained it.

The county deployed about a dozen firefighters, two brush trucks and two fire engines to two 1-acre fires at Fifth Street Southwest and 20th Avenue, said Brian Burkeen county fire rescue spokesman.

Crews snuffed out the fire by about 3 p.m. in little more than an hour.

Although nearby Bradford Place subdivision wasn't threatened, the windy conditions prompted the county to keep a brush truck there for a while as a precaution, Burkeen said.
