Gennifer Dean: Teen dies after being hit by car Thursday night in Vero Lake Estates

VERO LAKE ESTATES — A 17-year-old Sebastian River High School student died after she was struck by a car Thursday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Gennifer Dean was walking west on 83rd Street near the 97th Avenue intersection with some friends shortly after 8 p.m., troopers said. She was struck by a westbound Chevrolet Malibu driven by Ashleigh Bates, 27, of Sebastian.

Paramedics took Dean to Sebastian River Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Nicole Devlin, who is dating Dean's brother, described the SRHS senior as someone who was energetic and enjoyed having fun.

On Friday morning, Devlin plodded through the watery ditch on the north side of 83rd where Dean was struck. Devlin said she was looking for a boot Dean had worn before the accident. After a few minutes of searching, Devlin found the boot.

"(Dean) lives in Fellsmere, but she was here in Vero Lake Estates to spend the night with a friend," Devlin said.

There were no classes at any schools in the Indian River County School District because it was closed Friday.

The accident remained under investigation.
