West Palm Beach death investigation: Woman, girl found dead

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A woman and girl were found dead inside a home Thursday night, according to West Palm Beach police.

A man said he went to a house in the 130 block of Gregory Place at about 10:30 p.m. to pick up his daughter.   However, he was unable to get inside and called police.

Officers then entered the home and found a woman and a juvenile dead inside.

Police confirmed the pair as ten-year-old Alex Brooks and her mother Pam Brooks.

A police spokesman said the situation was "extreme" and that they were waiting to notify family of the details before releasing more information.

The parents are divorced and friends say both mom and dad were incredible parents.

"You would never suspect something like that. One in our quiet little neighborhood. And two, with a mom that is one of the best moms you could ever meet. Very hands on. All the time," said friend Teri Tyson.

Authorities said they are treating the situation as a death investigation.

"I'm sure the police and the first responders are able to take care of everything but certainly not something you expect to see on the south end or anywhere in the city that you live in, so its quite disturbing," said neighbor Josh Galle.

Alex Brooks was a student at The King's Academy in West Palm Beach, according to a representative of the school.

The King's Academy released the following statement regarding the shooting:

We grieve today for the loss of our precious student and friend, and we ask for respect and prayer as our community deals with this loss.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, and our concern is for our students. Grief counseling will be available for students today and in coming days as they become aware.

Neighbors told the Palm Beach Post that the family had lived in the neighborhood for several years.

There was a custody battle between the little girl's parents -- and the mother was arrested for a DUI in May.
