WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - David Feuer is the Cantor at Temple Emanuel on Palm Beach and his son went to school with Alex Berman.
Alex and his sister Jackie Berman were killed Monday in an apparent murder suicide inside their West Palm Beach home. Their mother was also found dead, though her body is yet to be identified.
"I think people cannot comprehend that something like this can happen. That a mother that loves her children in a moment of desperation killed them and herself," Feuer said.
Feuer chose a Jewish poem named "After my Death" to sing at a memorial service Tuesday at Dreyfoos School of the Arts.
His father wrote the music when he was a child in Argentina.
Part of the poem reads: "It is sad, one more song he had and now this song is gone for good. Gone for good."
Feuer says Alex and his sister Jackie will live on through their music.
"It is amazing that this kid at the age of 16 had a very clear idea of what he wanted to do with his life. He loved music, but he was focusing on becoming a medical doctor. So music was a way of getting to the future. That future didn't come, unfortunately," Feuer said.
The Berman family is now planning Alex and Jackie's funeral on Sunday at Temple Beth El in West Palm Beach.
They are asking that instead of flowers, all donations be made to the art school.
