Sarah Murnaghan, Pennsylvania girl gets news lungs and has more surgery

Her diaphragm was damaged during transplant

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A 10-year-old girl who got adult lungs after her parents sued to change national transplant rules had surgery to repair her diaphragm.

Sarah Murnaghan (MUR'-nuh-han) underwent the two-hour procedure at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon.

According to a Facebook post by her mother, doctors say the operation went well. Janet Murnaghan says her daughter is not yet awake.

Sarah needed new lungs because she has cystic fibrosis. Her first double-lung transplant failed. She received a second set of lungs on June 15, and that transplant appears to have been successful.

However, Sarah has been using a breathing tube because she suffered partial paralysis of her diaphragm during the transplant.

Tuesday's surgery should help her to breathe on her own.
