Samuel Fernandez : High school senior won't graduate because of one wrong answer

SAN ANTONIA, TX - (WOAI) San Antonio, Texas high school senior Samuel Fernandez was supposed to graduate at the Alamodome on June 11, but his graduation dreams were crushed.

"I feel like this one question doesn't justify my whole entire school life," said Fernandez.

Fernandez failed the math portion of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. He says he was one question short of passing. Because of this, he won't be allowed to walk the stage with his high school class.

"It was like a slap in the face, because he's accomplished so much and we're so proud of him," said Samuel's mother, Marie Fernandez.

Samuel says he's an honor student in the theatre program. He's also an officer in the pep squad, but says his school spirit is sinking.

"All through high school, I just really tried to do my best," Fernandez said. "I feel like my best is not good enough. Honestly, I feel like a failure, I really do."

Despite Fernandez's feelings, the Northside Independent School Distrct says the rules are the rules.
