Good Samaritans pull driver from creek

(WAVY) Hampton, Virginia rescue crews worked to pull a vehicle from New Market Creek following a crash Wednesday morning.

Two nearby residents pulled the only occupant in the vehicle to safety.

Bill Leath says he was doing early morning work in his garden when he saw the Nissan fly into the air, flip and crash into the water.

"I wasn't sure how many people were in the car," said Leath. "I didn't know what was going on. I knew I had to get down there to help."

Leath went running toward the creek. He says he saw the woman get out of the car, yell for help and then go back underwater. His neighbor Jake ran after him and both jumped in the water and started swimming toward the woman. She was face-down and unconscious when they reached her.

"I pulled her up and gave her a squeeze and water came out and she started breathing," said Leath. "So the two of us swam her back over to the side of the creek."
