Christy Kupper: Suspected drunk driver hits, injures woman at Tempe, Arizona Walmart

TEMPE, AZ - Police say a 31-year-old woman is facing numerous charges after her car struck a woman in the parking lot of a Tempe Walmart Friday night.

Tempe police Sgt. Michael Pooley said the incident started around 6:20 p.m. with an accident at the intersection of Rural Road and Southern Avenue.

Police said Christy Kupper, 31, was driving west on Southern Avenue when she collided with a car turning north on Rural Road, causing it to spin and hit a third car.

Pooley said, in an attempt to flee the scene, Kupper sped into a Walmart parking lot and hit another vehicle causing it to spin out of control and hit a woman walking out of the store.

Police said in addition to hitting the woman, Kupper's vehicle also hit several other cars in the parking lot.

Authorities said they believe alcohol played a factor in the accident.

"So she sped over here trying to get away from it all, and it ended up worse," said witness Tyler Hoskins.

Pooley said Kupper was taken into custody and is being charged with six counts of endangerment, one count of aggravated assault, DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

Authorities said the victim was transported to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police said judging from the surveillance video of the Walmart parking lot, they can't believe no one else was hurt.
