Etta Lopez accused of slapping deputy to help her quit smoking; charged with assualting an officer

(CNN) - A California woman apparently took an extreme measure to try to quick smoking.

And it got her arrested, just as she planned.

Deputy Matt Campoy says it came out of nowhere as he left his shift at the county jail. A woman was intentionally blocking his way.

"All of a sudden she stepped into me and slapped me in the face," said Deputy Campoy.

That woman, according to deputies is 31 year old Etta Lopez.

She was immediately arrested.

But it appears Lopez had a plan, allegedly slapping a cop to kick a habit.

Lopez admitted she sat in front of the county jail for hours intent on assaulting an officer to get arrested and be put in jail, where she would be forced to stop smoking cigarettes.

Kimberly Bankston-Lee is with the anti-smoking group Breathe California.

She insists cold-cocking a cop, isn't a way to quit cold turkey.

Lopez is charged with assaulting a police officer.
