That's crazy. Where was the mayor? Where was the assistant? I had to go out in my vehicle and purchase items for these people, and went to local businesses and asked for help. Where's the mayor?" Said resident Thalia Freman said.

At Tuesday night's meeting, Hoffman spoke with area representative Meg Weinburger. She said she is immediately starting a GoFundMe, pledging $5,000 of her own money to those affected.

Weinburger said moving company Good Greek Movers will match that $5,000 as they look into the storage of the residents' property until they find a more permanent living situation. She also secured the help of Big Dog Ranch Rescue and Furry Friends to assist with any displaced pets.

"I lead with my heart. I'm going to be the same person I've always been, helping the humans and animals as much as I possibly can," Weinburger said.

This comes as the commission made a controversial vote, electing a new city manager and removing the interim manager who residents say has been instrumental in assisting those displaced.

This story was reported on air by a journalist and has been converted to this platform with the assistance of AI. She has nowhere to go and no plan.

She said she may only take what she can carry, including her dog.
Meg Weinberger speaks after dozens of Pahokee residents are displaced
When asked what shes been hearing from neighbors, Ward didnt hesitate: Umm, stress because a lot of them have really young kids. I know my good friend, her sister is seven months pregnant, she has two babies already.

Ward is one of 40 people forced out after an inspection found the building in deplorable conditions some units had no power or water, and others were missing windows and doors.

If you were in this position, you would want somebody to care, because at the end of the day it could happen to anybody, Ward said. This is not because were irresponsible people because we dont care about where we stay or where we live, its just weve been placed in an unfortunate situation with a slumlord.

Last week, Interim City Manager Tammy Bussey told WPTV she had not heard from the landlord, Harry Segal.

WPTV also attempted to contact him, and is working to hear back.

Bussey was back on site Tuesday working with residents. She said the city and county have found housing for about 30 people with help from local organizations but about 10 residents are still in need of shelter.

Thats where community voices are stepping in.

Were putting the call out for help, were pulling together everybody that we can, said Anthony Green, a community advocate with Flex 4 Medical Center based in Belle Glade. We have a building being inspected across the street with five apartments, so I believe that we will be housing five of them today and Im choosing the ones with children first.

Green was helping residents, telling WTPV the need is beyond urgent.

Were putting the call out for help, we have no place to put them," he said.

Neighbors have been showing up with food and water, offering to pay for hotel rooms and even Airbnbs to help displaced families.

They need help right now. If anybody can help, please come forward. Its very heartbreaking, said Angela Anderson, who lives in Pahokee.

If you have available housing or space for families, youre asked to contact the city of Pahokee immediately.

Palm Beach County says its Community Services Department has already reached out to the residents affected.

If you are a resident in need of assistance or you know someone who is you can call the countys main hotline at (833) 273-9455 or email Michelle Newbold at mhowellp@pbc.gov.

Ward says even small gestures matter: "Any help that you can, even if it's just prayers, we're just looking for the safety of our families right now."

She said there are exposed wires, opened electrical boxes and people using extension cords to share electricity.

"There's like a lot of trash, a lot of stuff left in the apartment dirt, roaches, it's real bad, it's real bad," Darien Sparkman, who was helping clean up, said.

A resident named Keith Arnold is disabled but let Lopez into his apartment to see the conditions for himself.

"It's hard to find a place in Pahokee man, really anywhere right now these days," Arnold said.

He hasn't had power for about a year and a half and the only light he has is from a lamp that's plugged into an extension cord getting power from elsewhere.

"There was a lady, she tried to find a place, she couldn't find a place, it was too high, like over $1,700, I can't afford that," Arnold said.

According to the city, about 40 people, making up roughly 20 families, live in the building and will have 10 days to find a new place to live before the property is fenced off.

"We are assisting these residents in finding somewhere to have shelter if they are ready to leave immediately," Bussey said.

City staff, the fire marshal, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office are at the property going to each apartment to explain the situation and collect household information, Bussey told WPTV. The county is also assisting the residents in finding safe housing and jobs.

"I will not let them be homeless," Bussey told WPTV.

She said the building's owner has avoided accountability for years and continues to collect $750 in rent per month. The city plans to demolish the buildings and take action against the owner.

"This building has been a complaint for our city for a while," Bussey said.

Residents told Lopez they also want the landlord, Harry Segal, held responsible. Lopez tried calling Segal but has yet to hear back.

Read more of WPTV's related coverage below:
