James Spader: Actor to play villain in 'Avengers' sequel

First 'Avengers' movie earned $1.5 billion

(CNN) - Marvel announced three-time Emmy winner James Spader will play the bad guy in the next Avengers movie.

The original Avengers movie from 2012 earned $1.5 billion, making it the third highest grossing film of all time.

Spader will play Ultron, a robot, in the sequel, called "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

Its release date is May 1, 2015.

Spader will also star Sept. 23 in NBC's new show "The Blacklist".
