Man shot by off-duty deputy after poolside altercation

A man is in critical condition at Delray Medical Center after a deputy-involved shooting in suburban Boca Raton.

The law enforcement officer entered the pool area of Reflections of Boca Del Mar and says he encountered a male and female engaged in sexual activity.

Investigators say the off-duty deputy, identified as Alex Alfonso, a 7 year veteran with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, advised the couple that he is a deputy and asked them to leave the premises.

They did so reluctantly, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

A short time later the couple returned.

PBSO said the male suspect, later identified as Tony Ribeiro, 49, approached the off-duty deputy, who was sitting in a lounge chair, and hovered over him in a threatening manner.

An altercation ensued and Ribeiro raised a glass bottle and attempted to strike the off duty deputy, officials say.

Alfonso fired his weapon, striking Ribeiro.

Dane Jones, who is from Ohio and visiting family, heard the gunshots. "Came over here to the pool and I heard about four five gunshots and I've seen a bunch of swat team and ambulance"

Detectives are investigating the incident and Alfonso has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard department protocol.
