Child struck by vehicle in Acreage area

THE ACREAGE, Fla. - A car struck a child shortly after she got off a school bus in The Acreage Tuesday afternoon.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office confirms the child, who attends Golden Grove Elementary, was walking home when she was hit. The driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene and spoke with investigators.

The collision happened at 130th Avenue North and North Persimmon Boulevard just after 2:15 p.m.

A witness says she spoke with the driver who said she was distracted by the children in her car and didn't see the girl.

Neighbors says the girl was walking on the edge of the road almost in the grass when she was hit by the car.  There are no sidewalks where the incident took place.  Neighbors say the girl's mother witnessed the accident.

"The mother was coming to pick her up," says neighbor German Custodio, "She was walking and she saw her."

Custodio helped the girl's mother communicate with police and paramedics. He says she doesn't speak English very well.

People who live nearby and walk the streets on a regular basis say similar incidents are happening too often and drivers need to slow down.

"Wow, people should really be paying attention around the time the bus drops off around here cause there are swarms of kids walking up and down the roads constantly when the bus drops off," said Juliana Davis.

"I would put speed bumps," says Custodio, "We need it.

My parents say they don't allow their children to walk on the street because it's too dangerous.

The Palm Beach County School District released this statement late Tuesday afternoon:

"The School District is deeply saddened by the recent accident involving one of our students. Situations like this should make us more aware of our roadways and intersections. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and the entire Golden Grove Elementary community."
