Sawgrass Expressway now cashless tolling, drivers must use Sunpass for paying tolls

FORT LAUDERDALE - The cash toll option has been removed on the Sawgrass Expressway as of Sunday.

The conversion is the latest push to an all-electronic toll collection.

Crews worked overnight to deactivate all cash tollbooths and coin baskets at the Sunrise toll plaza, the Deerfield toll plaza and 15 ramp plazas, according to the Department of Transportation.

Now, drivers will have to pay tolls with either the SunPass or the "toll by plate" option.

The second option takes a photo of the vehicle's license plate and sends a bill in the mail to the car's registered owner.

A $2.50 administrative charge is added per invoice.

Motorists do not need to stop at the deactivated tollbooths.

Drivers should not exceed the 25 mile-per-hour speed limit.

Construction and changes continue to unfold along the expressway as the project is expected to be completed in early 2015.
