Flavia Pennetta of Italy topped Kateryna
Bondarenko of the Ukraine in the second of Saturday's singles matches to
even their Fed Cup quarterfinal at one match apiece.
Pennetta posted a 7-5, 6-3 win for the defending Fed Cup champs after Alona
Bondarenko had given the host country a 1-0 edge in the best-of-five tie
with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Italy's Francesca Schiavone in the opening
rubber.
Saturday's winners will square off in the first reverse singles match
Sunday, as Pennetta takes on Alona Bondarenko. The losers from Saturday will
then meet in the second reverse singles, as Schiavone takes on Kateryna
Bondarenko.
The potentially decisive doubles match is slated to pit Mariya Koryttseva and
Viktoria Kutuzova for the Ukraine against the Italian duo of Sara Errani and
Roberta Vinci.
Italy captured its second Fed Cup title in four years with a victory over the
United States in last year's final.
The Ukraine is playing in the World Group of the Fed Cup for the first time.
This weekend's winner will advance to the semifinals against the winner
between Germany and the Czech Republic.
