Rory McIlroy withdraws from Honda Classic, fans disappointed

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Many fans are still in disbelief that Rory McIlroy left halfway through Honda Classic.

The course scoreboard said it all. There was a squiggly line by his name through the holes he did not complete and next to that, in bold letters, WD for withdrew.

Some fans asked about the decision today were disappointed. They wanted to see the star who has a home in South Florida.

Many who didn't have a chance to see him Thursday tried to get a glimpse of him on the course today.

"We were excited to see him and he's so good, why quit halfway through? It's a little shocking," said one fan. Added another,  "Couldn't believe it, could not believe it and disappointed. This is a big attraction in Palm Beach County and he's from Jupiter and he represents Palm Beach County. That was a disappointment to one of our residents basically."

Feeds on Facebook and Twitter lit up when people heard the news of Rory withdrawing.

McIlroy already was 7-over par through eight holes of the second round when he decided to withdraw.

About an hour after he left, McIlroy released a statement that attributed his withdrawal to a sore wisdom tooth.

"I have been suffering with a sore wisdom tooth, which is due to come out in the near future," McIlroy said. "It began bothering me again last night, so I relieved it with Advil. It was very painful again this morning, and I was simply unable to concentrate. It was really bothering me and had begun to affect my playing partners."
