Recycling concrete to create a haven for fish, divers

SAINT LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. - St. Lucie County is creating a new artificial reef.

On Monday it plans to deploy about 15-hundred tons of concrete poles and culverts, into 60-feet of water. The donated materials will be sunk several miles offshore,  just North of the Fort Pierce Inlet.

It's close to several other artificial reefs.
The underwater structures support several species of fish including grouper, snapper, cobia, sea turtles and baitfish.

Reefs eventually also attract tourists and fishermen.
