McClinton, an undersized scorer at 6 feet 1, might just have been looking for a workout, with Dozier expected to be offered a contract and veteran forward Juwan Howard remaining available to fill out the final spot on the roster for camp, which opens Saturday on the team's practice court.
The Heat already have added depth at point guard for camp with the signing of journeyman veteran Garrett Temple.
McClinton, who developed a close friendship with former Heat swingman Dorell Wright during his time in South Florida, played the final three years of his collegiate career at Miami, leaving in 2009, after leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring as a senior.
He then worked out for the Heat prior to the 2009 NBA Draft, a session that left coach Erik Spoelstra impressed. The Heat nonetheless bypassed him in favor of guard Patrick Beverley in the second round.
McClinton was selected with the No. 51 pick of that draft by the San Antonio Spurs, but released on the eve of training camp. He later was cut during the 2009 preseason by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He since has played in Turkey, Israel and the Ukraine.
