A public memorial service for all fans and media will take place at Sun Life Stadium on Wednesday, May 4 at 7 pm. The service will be a celebration of the life and achievements of Jim Mandich during his 40-year career with the Miami Dolphins. Further details will be announced next week.
Also, the Mandich family released a statement: "Our entire family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love we have received not only over the last day but over the past 16 months during Jim's battle with cancer. Jim had a true passion for the Miami Dolphins family and was proud that his name was synonymous with the team he so loved. Among his remarkable achievements, he was a wonderful, loving husband and father. We will miss him dearly. We thank the fans and the media for their ongoing support and their respect for our family's privacy during this time."
A small, private memorial service will be held for family and close friends over the weekend. Mandich, a South Florida broadcasting icon and member of the undefeated 1972 Dolphins, died Tuesday after a 16-month battle with bile duct cancer.
In lieu of flowers, the Mandich family asks that donations be made to the Dolphins Cycling Challenge that benefits the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer. Online donations can be made at ridedcc.com. Checks should be made out to "The Miami Dolphins Foundation" and addressed to:
