Lake Worth native Tony Cruz is finding success as a backup catcher with the St. Louis Cardinals

JUPITER, Fla. -- Lake Worth native Tony Cruz is finding success in Major League Baseball as a backup catcher in St. Louis.

He was drafted by the Cardinals in 2007 as a third baseman out of Palm Beach State College.  Soon after, the Santaluces High School grad was asked to give things a try behind the plate.

The rest is history.

Cruz backs up arguably the best catcher in baseball, Yadier Molina, and hopes to one day earn a shot at being a full-time starter for a big league squad.

In 2012, Cruz make just two throwing errors in 293.1 innings, throwing out eight of 26 base stealers.  His batting average was solid for a MLB catcher, .254.
